Rutherford B. Hayes was born in Delaware Ohio on October 4, 1822 to Rutherford and Sophia Birchard Hayes. He was the fifth child but only he and his sister Fanny grew to adulthood. His father died two months before Rutherford was born. He graduated at the head of his class from Kenyon College in Ohio. He graduated from the Harvard Law School and was admitted to the bar in 1845. He opened up a law office in Cincinnati and became a famous trial lawyer. He married Lucy Ware Webb on December 30, 1852. They had eight children with only five living to adulthood. Hayes served in the Civil War and was wounded four times. After the war Hayes resigned from the army with the rank of Major General. He became a three times governor of Ohio and helped establish the Ohio State University.
